Electrical Panel Repairs, Upgrades, & Installations

Comprehensive Electrical Panel Services in Vernon

Most people flip a switch and don’t think twice about whether the light will turn on. Nor do they wonder if they’ll be able to use their coffee maker when they plug it in. Despite taking for granted our modern conveniences, a home’s electrical system is a complex system. A primary component of that system is the electrical panel.

An Electrical Panel’s Purpose

An electrical meter outside your home routes power to the electrical panel. The panel includes a main breaker that can shut off the feed of electricity into your home. The panel also includes circuit breakers that control certain parts of your home. Each breaker should have a label that identifies the area of the house it controls. Home electric services in Canada range from 60 to 400 amps. At least 100-amp service is mandated by most electrical codes. If your panel has less than 100 amps, you will have difficulty acquiring home insurance or, at the very least, pay much higher premiums.

The electrical panel generally has the capability to support both 120 and 240 voltages. The higher voltage helps larger equipment like HVAC run more efficiently. Panels are generally placed in garages, storage rooms, basements, and other less-conspicuous areas. Some homes will have their electrical panel outside.

Older homes may have a fuse box instead of an electrical panel. These boxes have screw-in fuses instead of breakers.

Every Canadian province and municipality has its own requirements and technical specification. Work on breaker boxes and electrical wiring should always be done by a qualified person.

At Bee’s Knees Plumbing and Heating, our skilled technicians can repair, upgrade, or replace your home’s electrical panel. We serve the Vernon area, including Salmon Arm, Kelowna, and Okanagan.

Electrical Panel Repairs

Just like basically everything else in a home, electrical panels will occasionally need repair. Circuit breakers wear out over time. If a breaker repeatedly trips or if it is hot to the touch, it probably needs to be replaced. Wires around the breaker can fray and you may also see damage like burned material. The wires can also become corroded.

Circuit breakers are not the only problem-causers in an electrical panel. The circuit breakers attach to the main power terminal at a point called a bus bar. The bus bar can also become damaged and causing arcing trouble.

All of these are signs that you need an electrician to evaluate what repairs are needed.

A fuse doesn’t “trip” as a circuit breaker does. Instead, fuses are designed so that the fuse wire melts and interrupts the power if the electrical load exceeds the maximum for that fuse.

Electrical Panel Upgrades

Sometimes, repairing an electrical panel is not enough. If you have fuses instead of breakers, you will want to consider upgrading from the fuse box to a breaker box. You should also consider an upgrade if your service doesn’t provide enough power for your home.

Faulty or overloaded circuits can be dangerous. If circuits are older or are shouldering additional demand, an upgrade can reduce safety issues and keep your home’s electrical system working properly.

Your electrical panel might need an upgrade in any of the following situations:

  • The panel feels warm.
  • Breakers flip when you plug in an appliance.
  • Your lights flicker.
  • You have remodeled your home.
  • You have ungrounded wiring.
  • You notice burn marks inside the panel.

Upgrades are not only about safety. An electric panel upgrade can expand your home or facility’s electrical output. Some panels have the capacity within them to add new breakers to support additional electrical needs.

Electrical Panel Installations

When you add on to your home and increase the electrical demand beyond the capacity of your electrical panel, you will need a new installation. For example, if you build an addition for your new home office, you will need electricity for the lights and outlets. You’ll be running computers and other electronics. Or maybe you add a garage to your home. You will install garage door openers, lights, and maybe even need power for tools. These are just two examples of when you may need a new subpanel installed.
